City Of Trees (July 8th, 2007)

Thankful for a great vacation-week in Forest City, Maine (waaaay up North) where you can fall asleep to the cries of loons, where a small brown duck can fly into your island log-cabin to waddle about for a spell, where a fish-filled-lake makes for your front "lawn", where the night stars are brighter than the the halogen beam lamps of most cars, where there's no electricity, cellphones, computers, or television sets (amen), where red squirrels are so bold they'll eat cashews from your hand on the first offering, where bats chatter in the chimney rafters after nightfall and swoop down close enough to feel the flaps of their wings brush your hair, where you can see more species of birds flit about your forested spot than you can count on both hands and feet, where people are so dependent on community because in such isolation it means not just friendship but survival, where someone carrying a gun is the farthest thing from a criminal or a cop, where 'Billy & Nan' are a local legend of two island bound lovers, where a rickety old wooden canoe makes for a great wild-blueberry harvesting-float, where "typical Maine weather" can vary from a sweltering 90 degree heat to quarter-sized hail stone storms in mid-July, where a moose sighting is as common as seeing your neighbor's dog, where bear cages cover every dumpster, where SUVs actually serve a purpose(!), and where every sunset is a major event.

And, of course, dragonflies. Tons of colorful (mosquito-eating!)
dragonflies.

Dragonfly Carousels (June 19th, 2007)

Belated posting... just got back from our house hunting trip to Austin.

I'll keep this short.

Thankful for all of the dragonflies symbolically swarming about our
soon-to-be new city, some others hung as stained glassed ornamentation in the windows, the dozens of crafts-y ones disguised as paperweights, note clips, cards and mirrors, and the two that buzzed above our heads on our walk to our new house.

They were everywhere.

And, therefore, so was she...

Austin City Unlimited (June 8th, 2007)

This week I'm thankful for the great city of Austin, Texas where my wife and I just found out we'll be moving to by the end of this July.

I'm grateful for all of the heartfelt sentiments that many folks have expressed about our leaving Massachusetts (at least for awhile anyway...).

That said, I'm grateful for New England, as well as, the State of
Massachusetts for being a good place to live (when it wants to be!), and especially its location to many things wonderful: the White Mountains, Burlington, Vermont, the Atlantic Ocean (the Cape!), New York City, (wait? we're leaving all of this behind!?), Maine and it's abundance of good people and ... ahem, this is gonna hurt most of all... it's out-of-this-world lobsters(!), and, of course, most thankful for all of our friends & colleagues who live here --> we're not leaving *you* we're just heading out West for a spell!

And, to address the folks who cock-an-eye when we say, "Texas." and then respond, "TEXAS!? What in the Sam-Hill are you moving to Texas for?!" To this we say - we're thankful, despite some of the political foolishness going on at the moment, that we're all still lovable, goofy Americans who, despite our differences, will always be welcomed in any state we're going to no matter 'where we're coming from'...

Enjoy the weekend, Ya'll,

Dennis

Memorial Day Observed (May 25th, 2007)

I'm thankful for all of the great get-togethers we'll be going to this weekend where, once again, we'll be amongst friends and colleagues to share in each others' good company.

And, I'll second Jens T.'s sentiment about being thankful & respectful about the folks overseas in an otherwise very sad & scary situation... I'll be most thankful when it's over.

I'm thankful for this most excellent (albeit, HOT) Friday. Especially thankful it's officially biking & rowing season again!

I'm thankful everyone is hanging in there and doing well this week.

Memorial Service Reflection (May 18th, 2007)

I'm thankful that if there has to be such a sad moment in our lives that we all have the strength to walk forward from it as changed and better people.

I'm thankful Bern and Jen met.

I'm thankful they brought the world their beautiful children.

I'm thankful in knowing Bern will have the love & support he and his family, needs to grow and feel great joy again.

I'm thankful for catching up with all the long lost friends and elementary school teachers(!!) at Jen's wonderful service (and, yes, I'm thankful for the perfect weather that day).

I'm thankful that our friends Bethany & Glenn gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl that will someday be president(!).

I'm thankful that our dear friend Beth Manning came and stayed with us last weekend so we could support one another and manage the highs and lows together - because that's exactly what lifelong friendships are all about.

I'm thankful that Beth made it safely back to San Francisco to be once again embraced by her lovely family.

I'm thankful that Chris Arruda, Amy Cole and everybody else involved in planning and creating the service are such smart, competent, talented, excellent people.

I'm very thankful for my patient and loving wife, Heather.

I'm thankful for anyone making it this far down my 'thankful list'...! ;^)

There's much more to be thankful for but I'll stop here ... for now.

Than~xo

p.s. - oh, and one more thing... I'm thankful for "Fire".
