Why The Squirrels Aren't Fat Here

There are pecans in abundance here in Austin.

They fall from the branches as if the trees were playing "War" with you.

Duck!

Here comes another one!

"Fweeeeeeeeee! THUD!"

The squirrels aren't fat here in town because there is plenty of food to go around for them. The ground is littered with nuts!

Enough nuts to bust a nut over!

They could eat until they exploded if they chose to ... but they don't.

They are not gluttonous because they know there will always be enough to eat.

Squirrels are pretty smart...

So, what's your excuse, America?

Nostradamus's Gentler Side

"KER-CHUNK!"

(pause)

"RollRollRollRollRollRollRollRoll...."

(pause)

"Pah-Thud!"

That is the sound pecans make when falling onto our roof and hitting the ground outside here in Hyde Park. It happens all day and all night long - but not in any mind rattling way. It is a very pleasant sound, in fact.

It is the sound of Autumn in Austin.

You can pick these nuts off of the earth in abundance around these parts and eat them right from the shell. There is never a shortage of Pecan Pies in town.

Should we ever find ourselves in a far away new city in the future I predict this will be a sound I will miss.
